Glad to hear people using the engine:) I'm using a forked version of it myself for some years now and have been developing a rather big game with it.Sauerbraten is quite limited. I'd suggest looking into the more active Tesseract, with improved shaders and map editing or give Lamiae a try, which has extended scripting (as in: has an own, easy-to-use scripting language for game logic) and a really nice GUI for editing.If you've any questions in detail feel free to ask, although I fear I can't help you with questions about the source code itself.Also, you might want to ask the guys who created Revelade Revolution , which is a zombie shooter created with the Cube 2 engine.

When I floated some ideas for extensions using the engine I got nothing but flack and negativity.the multiplayer map editing is such a cool feature of their engine. I think it could be used for all sorts of stuff. You could make guns that modify the map!

It super easy to get up and going with that using python. The source for Cube 2 is a bit daunting at first glance, but it's actually not so complicated once you've started adding to it. The thing to note is that it's very procedural, so adding features in a consistent way with the engine is just a matter of adding some functions and calling them. Any actual 'object oriented' coding is mostly in the utility classes, the main code is very structured.I think it doesn't take long to familiarize yourself with it.
The difficult thing to get used to was extensive use of macros and the very confusing scripting language that comes with it. It's powerful but the syntax wasn't like anything I've ever used before. So if I were you I'd look into one of the forks that provide LUA or some other scripting language.If you have any questions feel free to send me a message.
