I haven't had a whole lot of time to put into it yet, but I can already say right now that this is probably one of the most fun games I've played in a while. As Lee posted in another thread, the gameplay isn't very deep (pretty much standard for the genre), but the control is top-notch, graphics are detailed and colorful, the animation is good, and the music is rockin'! The actual engine is pretty standard for this type of game, but what really makes it stand out is the combo engine. The way you can link the attacks together really adds another whole dimension of fun, IMO.

You can link all sorts of attacks to create your own chains, and there are also air juggles aplenty! You can also mix thrown weapons such as shurikens, bombs, dirks, etc. Into the combos(used by pressing the D-button), and each character also has 2 special moves activated by pressing 'down, down' and either A or B. And just like in one-on-one fighting games, these can be implemented into your combos for some truly devastating effects! BTW, for some reason the combo engine kind of reminds me of that old (Playstation?) game, Batman Returns (maybe Guardian Heroes for the Saturn as well - can someone else confirm this?), in that a lot of the high combo numbers come from hitting multiple enemies during the same barrage. If you're pounding on one opponent, and then a second walks into the hits, this will be figured into your hit count.

I've even seen times where I'll be hitting an enemy on one side of the screen, turn and run to the other side to attack a different guy, and the hit meter will keep going as if it were all one big attack. Kind of goofy, but fun in it's own way! Each character also has a 'super move' done by pressing 'down, up + AB', but this doesn't seem to be too helpful.

You seem to need a full energy bar (separate from your life bar) to do this, but this gets depleted pretty easily during the normal course of fighting (your other two regular moves draw from it), and it fills up VERY slowly. As has been said by others before, the game has a rather high difficulty. There aren't that many 'life up' items that I can see, and the fact that your 'Super Special' seems nigh useless makes it quite a challenge, but the controls are spot on, and everything just seems put together so well that you more than likely won't even notice it (if you're like me, you'll be too busy trying to put together your own nasty combos on the hapless villains! )All in all, it's a GREAT game - probably the best Neo game I've picked up in quite some time. While not really ground-breaking for the genre, it's chock-full of that old-school beat-em-up fun you don't see much nowadays, and for that reason alone, would be worth picking up for anyone even remotely interested in this field. Originally posted by GregN.:Wasn't Batman Returns on SNES? You're right, but it didn't have high combo counts. You must mean Batman forever on Saturn.

It had high combo counts (I think), but it was terrible, IMHO.Yeah, I think you're right - it was 'Batman Forever'. I played it on the Playstation though, not the Saturn. And you're also right about it being a terrible game!

I just meant it as a comparrison for the high hit-count engine used in a side scrolling fighting game.Sengoku must have some mad combos though - I thought I was pretty spiffy when I had a high of 18 hits. But then I noticed the ranking screen had a CPU combo count up to 50 hits (which also means that it's possible to get even higher counts!). Well I'll be damned. Seems SNK fixed the whole boring aspect of the game with the limited continues.

Sengoku 3 moves

I never really even thought about that. My major gripe with the game is that it seems to go on and on forever with nothing new. But for the home user, the newer boards will be a treat when they finally get to them. Ahhh, the game is not the worst on the neo, but I just don't see a lot of need/want for this genere any more. And I went into it thinking how cool this old school retro game would be. Oh well, I am glad to see that most people who have bought the home version are happy with it. It does look gorgeos doesn't it Too bad most screens are pretty static and don't scroll.

But none the less look great. And the zero slow down is pretty amazing in my eyes!-Nick. Originally posted by nruva:Well I'll be damned. And the zero slow down is pretty amazing in my eyes! -NickSee, I think this style of game has been sorely lacking in todays gaming environment. I grew up on the side scrolling beat-em-ups (Golden Axe, Final Fight, Streets of Rage, Aliens vs. Predators, etc.), and, sadly, these have all but disappeared today. So, as I said, while this game really isn't 'groundbreaking', I think it's a nice return visit to a style of game that's no longer really seen anymore, and I think this is one of the reasons people seem to be so happy about it.And let's face it, outside of 'classic' compilation discs, how many of the newer systems are going to have something like this on them? Metal soldiers 2 game online. It's really only on the Neo where those of us addicted to these can get our fix! It has great control, awesome music, some of the best character graphics on a game of this type.Animation is ok, not great.Very dull, repetitive palate swaped enemies.Dull, repetitive AI.

Mutation Nation is better than this by far. It's got some nice combo's, which unfortunatly just beat this game down. The AI is such a sad little monkey, it just allows you to beat this game down like a red headed step child.Sengoku 1 and 2 were much more challenging, and fun, IMO.I bought it to show my support of SNK.Had it been a game on another system, I wouldnt pay more than $20 for it.If your on the fence, & low on funds, I recomend waiting for the price to drop.Great for collectors, as it has a beautiful Insert, and manual.I think many gamers will find it too easy. A friend & I beat it two player 1st time thorough. There was almost no challange, until the final boss, who is true to form, very cheap. However, once you learn to just dodge him, & beat up the lackys supporting him. This builds up your gauges, allowing you to use your powers.Much easier, than fighting lord cheapness directly.
